Earth Week Day 5: Seed Starting & Gardening
April 23, 2021
What better way to welcome spring than starting veggie and flower gardens! Whether that’s starting seeds yourself or buying seedlings from your local greenhouse, we’ve got you covered.
We’ve partnered with Jackson’s Garden and Judy’s Garden & Greenhouse to bring you fantastic content today!
Starting seeds can bring a little green into a brown spring here in Montana and provide you fun throughout the summer. Starting vegetables and herbs from seed is a great way to get your gardens started early. The seedlings can also be transplanted into pots for a low maintenance solution to gardening.
Instead of purchasing seed starting trays, try out one of these 14 unique ways to start seeds: 14 Clever Ways to Start Seeds | HGTV
Visit local greenhouses & gardens!
If seed starting isn’t for you, make a visit to a local greenhouse to pick up seedlings!
In the Ruby Valley, there are quite a few greenhouse options to choose from!
Judy’s Garden & Greenhouse: Judy’s Garden & Greenhouse | Facebook
Judy will open to the public starting mid-April. Judy is an amazing resource, telling us that she “offers growing tips to my customers who have their own personal greenhouses and whatever help they may need to get growing. Along with help growing in their outdoor gardens. I mix my own planting mix, and do all the planting and work myself.” Keep in mind for next year that many of Judy’s customers give her their orders early and she grows for them whatever they may need or want for their gardens! Judy also grows and sells berries, trees, and shrubs from bare root stock.
Contact Judy at 842-5153 or firstname.lastname@example.org or visit 79 Patrick Lane, Sheridan, MT 59749
We got a sneak peak of her greenhouse!
Countryside Greenhouse: Countryside Greenhouse | Facebook
Countryside Greenhouse is located in Twin Bridges and sells bedding plants, perennials, herbs, veggies, potting soil, planters, and hanging baskets. They opened on Earth Day (yesterday!), so go check them out!
The Little Greenhouse behind Walter’s Family Foods & ACE Hardware
Incorporate a trip to the greenhouse with a run for groceries. The Little Greenhouse behind Walter’s is opening at the end of April with a selection of deer resistant plants, hanging baskets, bird seed & hummingbird supplies, flower pots, bedding, and organic seeds, vegetables, sprays & more. Give them a call with questions: 406.842.5413.
Sheridan also has a beautiful community garden, Jackson’s Garden! https://www.jacksonsgarden.org/ | Jackson’s Garden (@jacksonsgardenmt) • Instagram photos and videos
Jackson’s Garden is open to the public year-round and is home to beautiful flower and vegetable gardens in the summer. If you join the garden as a member, you have access to produce and flowers grown on the property!
Jackson’s Garden created a video for us with 5 Tips for Conserving Water in the Garden! As we learned on Wednesday with Lucas Zukiewicz, NRCS Water Supply Specialist, this summer is expected to be hot and dry. Conserving water is always important, but will be crucial this summer!
Thanks to Jackson’s Garden & Sara Gilman for this awesome video!
And if gardening isn’t for you, shop at your local farmers market. A great way to support local businesses and eat healthy is to shot at you local farmers markets. Here are a few options!
